Naval Warfare: Space Big Battles

Does what it says on the label............

Includes :

Rules set for use with miniatures or counters

Data Cards for a range of ship types from Dreadnoughts down to humble corvettes,  and fighters. - These fit into plastic card sleeves to allow recording of damage with a wipable marker.

Counters for ships (as an alternative to miniatures).

Counters for fighters and bombers (small single man ships with anti- ship torpedoes).

Game play counters and turn arcs.

A single sheet Quick Reference Sheet

The game has a simple mechanism and damage system with d6, d8, d10 and d12 dice used to correspond to different weapon sizes, and a simple damage control system utilising the data cards provided.

Weaponry can be predominantly bow or beam mounted.

This provides a game of simple mechanism, but the player will have to have the right ships in the right place with targets in the right arcx to succeed........big weapon systems are less effective against fighters/ bombers than small guns or fighters.  Small ships such as cruisers are needed to screen your battle ships from smaller ships with torpedoes.

There are three ship crew skill levels and and this is reflected in both the attach and defence statistics of the ships.

The simple mechanisms allow games with several miniatures a side - this is as game for fleet actions.

I collect starship combat games; some I regularly play, some I try a go and play it on occasion, and some I know I won't have the patience for but buy it because I collect rules. I'm very pleased to say that Naval Warfare: Big Space Battles is one I play very regularly. A very pleasant system that really hits the "sweet spot" for fleet engagements. I highly recommend it, especially if you're looking for a "beer and pretzels" game of starship combat, or looking to get new players hooked into the genre. I hate to sound effusive, but this is a rules set worth getting and breaking out to use when you want to conduct a fleet engagement. Fun and engaging, with a sufficient amount of tactical decision-making, especially given that you have to husband your defenses each turn. Do you hedge your bets and dedicate the minimum amount of defense, or risk spending "just a bit more" to ensure you ensure you deflect enemy fire. Fighter add another element that can satisfy your Star Wars or Battlestar...See more

After playing the game, one house rule that I came up with allows for more effective shields. Shields can be used at full strength ONCE in a turn, after that, shields use half dice (round up). This is less harsh than the original rules for shields but it does mean the game takes a bit longer to play since you always have shields available ( until their knocked out! ). I use a counter to mark a ship that has used it's full shields for the turn. I didn't like keeping track of how many shield dice a particular ship had expended.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
